Flavored Cream Cheese Is More Creative Than Ever
Forget the dusty tub of garden vegetable spread. A new generation of cream cheeses is drawing on flavors like black sesame, berbere, curry, and chili-lime peanut — and transforming a familiar refrigerator staple into a shortcut to culinary adventure.
Zebrina Cream Cheese Spread Flavors
For years, flavored cream cheese meant a predictable lineup: scallion, vegetable, strawberry, maybe smoked salmon. Those familiar flavors were pleasant and practical, designed to make a bagel a little more interesting without asking much of anyone.
Cream cheese is beloved for that reason. It’s rich yet tangy, indulgent yet familiar, and equally at home at breakfast or in a party dip. But while other grocery categories have embraced bold flavors, cream cheese has largely stayed the same.
Irena Lasenby saw an opportunity. The founder of Zebrina, a New York-based company, is launching three globally inspired cream cheeses: Chili Lime Peanut, Passionfruit Black Sesame, and Apricot Ginger Curry. The idea grew out of a habit she’d had since childhood.
“The day after I decided to start a food brand, I caught myself mixing cream cheese with berbere, the Ethiopian spice blend I grew up with,” she says. “That was the lightbulb moment.” She realized cream cheese could be a vehicle for flavors people might not otherwise cook with — something familiar that could carry something new.
“Cream cheese is incredibly versatile and surprisingly untouched as a category,” Lasenby says. “It felt like the perfect way to introduce vibrant global flavors into everyday routines.”

Cream cheese’s mild, creamy base makes it an ideal canvas. It can soften heat, balance sweetness, and carry spices — but it’s not always straightforward. “Dairy is a demanding canvas,” Lasenby says. “The richness and acidity can change how ingredients behave in ways you don’t expect.”
Some ideas didn’t translate. Lasenby went to work experimenting. A Thai basil flavor, for example, tasted woodier and more peppery than intended. Others worked immediately. Those experiments helped define what could truly stand up to the base.
To develop Zebrina’s lineup, Lasenby mapped out cuisines known for bold flavors and began testing combinations. While some flavors nod to specific traditions, she chose names that clearly signal what’s inside — like Chili Lime Peanut — while leaving room for deeper storytelling.
That approach reflects a broader shift. Many consumers are now familiar with ingredients like gochujang, tahini, and black sesame, but don’t always have the time or confidence to cook with them. Flavored cream cheese can act as a bridge: recognizable but layered with something new.
“Plain cream cheese will always have its place,” Lasenby says, “but more people are actively seeking novelty and discovery.”
Cream Cheese Moves Beyond the Bagel

Cream cheese’s versatility extends far beyond breakfast. It’s the base of cheesecakes and frostings, a shortcut for dips and sauces, and a creamy addition to savory dishes.
After 15 years in New York hospitality, Lasenby saw that people want to cook more adventurously, but not necessarily more complicatedly. “One of the most common things I hear is, ‘I never would have thought to use cream cheese like this,’” she says.
Zebrina’s chef collaborator, Vanessa Bee, has explored that potential with dishes like ube waffles topped with Passionfruit Black Sesame cream cheese, and crab rangoons filled with Apricot Ginger Curry. Chili Lime Peanut has been paired with carrot tinga tostadas, while Apricot Ginger Curry has topped crab cakes.
Still, the appeal is simplicity. A spoonful can add creaminess, acidity, sweetness, and spice all at once — whether spread on toast, tucked into a sandwich, or served alongside roasted vegetables.
“Zebrina lets someone experience a layered, globally inspired flavor without needing five extra ingredients,” Lasenby says.
The Flavor That Almost Felt Too Adventurous

Of the three launch flavors, Lasenby initially thought Apricot Ginger Curry might be the hardest sell. It’s fruity and savory, familiar yet unexpected.
Instead, it became a favorite. “It consistently surprised people in the best possible way,” she says.
That response reflects a broader shift in how dairy is evolving. Yogurt and condiments have already embraced global flavors, and cream cheese is beginning to follow. It occupies a unique space — part cheese, part spread, part condiment — making it especially adaptable.
For Lasenby, the goal isn’t to reinvent cream cheese entirely, but to expand what it can be. The old flavored versions were about convenience. The new generation keeps that ease while adding curiosity and creativity. It can still elevate a bagel — but it might also lead to something unexpected. As Lasenby puts it: “Take something people already love and use it as a shortcut to adventure.”
